The combat system in Final Fantasy XIII-2 uses the same system as in its predecessor, in which a variation of the Active Time Battle system known as the Command Synergy 
Battle system is used and makes use of the Paradigm Shift system. Quick time events known as Cinematic Action are employed in order to allow the player to deal higher damage to enemies.
Monsters no longer freely roam the map as they did in Final Fantasy XIII. Instead, the monsters are now randomly generated, which is a return to the format of the earlier Final Fantasy games. The game also features a Live Trigger system in which various dialogue choices result in multiple different endings.
